OLLI Talk: The Economy and the Presidential Election (DRAKE HALL)
OSHR 3195When asked about what he saw as the main issues during the presidential election campaign in 1992, James Carville, who was a strategist for Bill Clinton, famously said, “The economy, stupid!” and that phrase became the mantra for the successful Clinton campaign. We are once again in a position where an incumbent president must deal with voter sentiment on this issue going into an election. We will briefly review the relationship between economic conditions and presidential election outcomes over the past several decades and examine how current economic conditions and perceptions of the direction of the economy might influence the outcome in November.
Dr. John Olienyk earned his Ph.D. in economics at Colorado State University. Subsequently he served for 37 years as a faculty member there, first in the Department of Economics, then in the Department of Finance and Real Estate. His research in economics and international finance has been published in various academic journals, and he has served as a consultant for several multinational firms. He has also served as an expert witness in legal proceedings, specializing in matters involving international finance and investments. John also has substantial international experience. He taught in MBA programs in France and Russia and participated in a faculty exchange program involving universities in Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Serbia, and Russia.
