Introduction to Ballroom Dancing: American Tango (Empire Grange)
OSHR 7074This course explores American Tango, a dynamic and theatrical style commonly performed in ballroom settings. Rooted in Argentine tango but adapted for a more structured approach, American tango is known for its dramatic movements, sharp footwork, and elegant frame. Participants will learn fundamental steps, musicality, partner connection, and styling techniques for both social and competitive dance. By the end of the course, participants will be able to: Demonstrate proper posture, frame, and footwork; Perform fundamental patterns such as the basic step, promenade, corte, and fan; Apply musicality and timing to their dance; Develop connection and communication skills for partnered movement. Level: No prior dance experience is required. This course is ideal for beginners as well as those seeking to refine foundational ballroom skills.
Recommended Attire: Please wear comfortable clothing that allows for movement and smooth-soled shoes suitable for dancing.
Frank Baczek has been dancing for 20 years, transitioning from a highly competitive all-sports background into dance. He has studied with many top-level instructors, primarily from the Chicago area, New York, California, Texas, and Colorado, and dances ballroom, swing, Latin, and country. Frank has appeared in two films, Broken and Beautiful (2012) and Johnny (2014). He has participated in numerous flash mobs, including a Chicago Bulls 2011 halftime show, and danced in international West Coast Swing rallies in 2021, 2022, 2024, and 2025. He performed with the 2024 Boulder Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra Discovery Concert Series and in multiple Goodtimes Dance Club Hustle Spotlight shows. Frank has taught dance at Micah Place in Loveland, Club Tico in Fort Collins, Goodtimes Dance Club, Aims Community College, and CSU Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. He loves seeing dancers learn, progress, and create meaningful connections—even for just a three-minute dance.
Lenina Olivas has been dancing her way through life for over 10 years, from belly dance to classic waltz and everything in between. Her training spans several local institutions, including Slapstep Studio, Aims Community College, and OLLI through CSU Extended Studies. Lenina firmly believes that everyone can learn how to dance—even those with two left feet. With a little practice, patience, and persistence, dance becomes a joyful way to stay in shape, meet new friends, and express yourself. In her world, dancing isn't about perfection—it's about showing up, moving your body, and having fun along the way.
