Birds of Life: A Reading (DRAKE HALL)
OSHR 8115I was peering into a shrub, trying to identify a bird I had never seen before, when a friend threw a ball into the bushes and a large dog lunged in after it. The bird vanished before I could see it. My friend laughed and said, "It's just a bird!" That moment sparked a months-long journey through bird memories, which later became the book Birds of Life. Each chapter reflects on a bird encounter that contributed to the author's development as a naturalist. This class will include readings from the book, along with discussion of how personal experiences connect us to the wonder of the natural world—and how remembering and sharing those stories can be both meaningful and rewarding.
Kevin Cook moved from Iowa to Colorado in 1974 and earned his B.A. in biology from Western State College in Gunnison, followed by his M.S. in wildlife biology at Colorado State University in Fort Collins. He worked five seasons as an interpretive naturalist with the National Park Service, including four seasons at Curecanti National Recreation Area and one at Everglades National Park. He also worked one summer as a wildlife technician for the Colorado Division of Wildlife. Since 1981, he has worked full time as a writer-naturalist, a career that has included writing, editing, speaking, consulting, teaching, and guiding—all involving Colorado's landscapes and wildlife.
