PERK: From the Silk Road to the Karakoram Highway

Bob Michael is among the few Americans who have traveled the Karakoram Highway between the old Silk Road city of Kashgar (in far western China) over the 15,500-foot Khunjerab Pass to the Hunza Valley of northernmost Pakistan. Perhaps the world’s most spectacular mountain road, the mountain scenery rises from merely enormous in China to a crescendo of savage sublimity in the Pakistan Karakoram range, the home of K2. In addition to learning what it takes to complete this journey, this course will touch on the geology that has powered the planetary train wreck that gave us these awesome mountains, and we’ll also discuss the plight of the Uyghur people in China.
